No image to flash and no config files to edit. The command installs a small agent that connects your device to your Companas account, on Linux, macOS or Windows.
- 1
Create your account
Sign up and open the Storage page. Your personal install command is waiting there.
- 2
Run the command
Pick your system and paste the command: Terminal on Linux and macOS, PowerShell on Windows. Your token links the device to you.
- 3
Open your files
The device appears under Storage within a minute. Open it and start uploading, organizing and sharing.
$ curl -fsSL https://companas.org/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- --server https://companas.org --token cmp_7f3a…e91c ✓ Agent installed ✓ Linked to your account as living-room-pi ✓ Storage ready: /srv/companas
Files are checked before they reach anyone.
Every upload and download is scanned with ClamAV while it passes through Companas. Files you put on a device directly are checked by fingerprint against ClamAV and MalwareBazaar. Your files are never copied; only their fingerprints are compared.
Scanned in transit
Uploads and downloads are scanned with ClamAV on the way. An infected download is stopped before it arrives.
Checked on your devices
Files placed on a device directly are checked by fingerprint. No file leaves the device for this.
You decide
When something is found, Companas asks you, moves the file to quarantine or deletes it, as you set it.
Basic protection against known malware, not a guarantee. Powered by ClamAV and MalwareBazaar. ClamAV is a trademark of Cisco Systems, Inc.
Runs on what you already have.
Linux, macOS or Windows: if it has a disk, it can be your NAS. Link as many devices as you like and switch between them in one place.
Raspberry Pi
Small, quiet and cheap to run. Add a USB drive and it’s ready.
Windows PC
Windows 10 or 11, no admin rights needed. Python comes along; nothing else is installed.
Mac
A Mac mini or iMac at home. The agent runs in the background while you’re logged in.
Old PC or server
Debian, Ubuntu or Arch: Companas runs as a system service and starts with the machine.
Already rent storage? Connect it too.
Add a bucket, a WebDAV share or an FTP server. It shows up next to your devices, with the same files view and the same sharing.
S3
AWS, Backblaze B2, Hetzner, Wasabi, MinIO and other S3-compatible storage.
WebDAV
Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology, QNAP or a Hetzner Storage Box.
FTP / SFTP
Any FTP, FTPS or SSH server, with a password or a key.
Backups
We’re still working out the best way to back up your devices, whether that’s to a second device, to the cloud, or both. It will show up under Backups once it’s ready.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about setup, devices and sharing.
What is Companas?
A website plus a small agent for Linux, macOS and Windows. Link a device or connect cloud storage you already have, then use it like your own NAS through the browser: browse, upload, download and share.
Which devices are supported?
A Raspberry Pi, an old PC or a home server with Linux (systemd), a Mac with macOS 12 or newer, or a PC with Windows 10 or 11. Macs and PCs are reachable while they’re on, awake and someone is logged in; a Pi or server simply stays on. You can also connect S3, WebDAV, FTP and SFTP storage.
How does a device get linked to my account?
Your account has a personal token. The install command on the Storage page already includes it, so running the script connects that device to you and nobody else.
Do I need admin rights?
On Linux the command runs with sudo, because the agent is installed as a system service. On macOS and Windows it runs as your user; no admin password is needed.
Where are my files stored?
On your own device, in a folder called companas (/srv/companas, ~/companas or C:\Users\you\companas) unless you choose another one. Companas is how you reach and manage them; it doesn’t keep copies.
What about big files?
Large uploads are sent in pieces and checked with SHA-256 once they’re complete. An interrupted or damaged upload is removed, so you never end up with half a file.
How do share permissions work?
You pick a folder and a person, then choose what they can do: only read, or read and write. You can change or remove access at any time. For people without an account, create a guest link with an optional password, expiry date or download limit.
Can I use it with a team?
Yes. Create an organization, invite members by email and set up departments with their own folders. Every member can also get a personal folder.
Do you scan files for malware?
Yes. Uploads and downloads are scanned with ClamAV on our server as they pass through, and files placed on your devices are checked by fingerprint against known malware from ClamAV and MalwareBazaar. It’s basic protection: new or changed malware can go unnoticed.
Are backups available?
Not yet. Backups are planned, and we’re still deciding how they will work.
